Operating principles

The operating principles of the GIMEMA Foundation can be summed up as follows:

Research excellence

The GIMEMA Foundation is committed to conducting high-quality research that contributes to the advancement of knowledge and the development of new treatments for haematological malignancies. It strives to design and conduct studies that are both rigorous and scientifically sound.

Collaboration

The GIMEMA Foundation recognizes the importance of collaboration in achieving its mission. It works closely with other research institutions, universities, and medical centres to pool resources and expertise, and facilitate the sharing of data and knowledge. The GIMEMA Foundation relies on a  team of over 40 professionals from various fields, including medicine, nursing, pharmacology, and statistics. This multidisciplinary approach enables the foundation to address complex research issues using a range of different approaches.

The patient comes first

The GIMEMA Foundation is committed to conducting research that addresses the needs and experiences of patients, and to ensure that patients have access to the latest treatments and care. Patient safety is core tenet for  all research activities, which are designed and carried out in compliance with international ethical standards: the Declaration of Helsinki and Good Clinical Practice guidelines (approved by the ICH). Clinical research activities are carried out in compliance with  all national and international regulatory and legal requirements.

Innovation

The GIMEMA Foundation invests in new technologies and clinical approaches that can potentially improve patient outcomes and encourages its researchers to be creative and open to new ideas.

Transparency

The GIMEMA Foundation operates with transparency and integrity and is committed to communicating its research findings and activities to the wider scientific and medical community. It is also committed to maintaining the highest ethical standards in all its activities, especially when recruiting and treating study participants.

Academic research

The GIMEMA Foundation promotes academic research in the field of haematology. It supports academic institutions and researchers through grants, scholarships, and other funding mechanisms, and encourages collaboration between academic and industrial partners. The organization believes that academic research is essential to advance  our understanding of haematological malignancies and develop new treatments.

Investigator-initiated trials

The GIMEMA Foundation supports investigator-initiated clinical trials, designed and conducted by independent investigators rather than pharmaceutical companies. These trials are often focused on testing new treatments or therapies that have not yet been approved by regulatory authorities. The GIMEMA Foundation provides funding, logistical support, and other resources to help researchers conduct these trials, with the goal of advancing our understanding of haematological malignancies and improving patient outcomes.

Scientific dissemination

The Data Centre provides training courses and conducts scientific dissemination activities to share research findings with the wider scientific community. This includes publishing research papers in peer-reviewed journals and presenting research findings at scientific conferences.
